In the mythology of many cultural traditions, the Phoenix is a long-lived bird that cyclically regenerates or is reborn. Symbolic of the Sun, it obtains new life by arising from the darkness into light. Its association with the Sun is reflected in its vibrant fire colors. Here the sundial's gnomon or shadowcaster is the red and orange Phoenix while its surrounding seven dropped yellow/golden feathers are hour markers.
